500 kV “Mukhrani” Transmission Line

The 500 kV “Mukhrani” transmission line was an interconnection between the power systems of Georgia and Azerbaijan, connecting the Ksani-500 substation with the AzSRES substation in Azerbaijan. Within the territory of Georgia, the length of the transmission line from the Ksani-500 substation to the Georgia–Azerbaijan border was 85 km and included 280 transmission towers. The line was commissioned in 1987 and had a design transmission capacity of 700 MW.

Currently, the section of the 500 kV “Mukhrani” transmission line between Towers No. 1 and No. 36, up to the Red Bridge area, has been rehabilitated and incorporated into the scheme of the new 500 kV “Mukhrani Valley” transmission line, which connects the Gardabani-500 substation in Georgia with the Samukh substation in Azerbaijan.

Following the construction of a new 500/400 kV substation in Marneuli with a capacity of 800 MVA, the section between Towers No. 280 and No. 110 of the 500 kV “Mukhrani” transmission line (56.7 km) was connected to the Marneuli-500 substation in 2016. The transmission line connecting the Ksani-500 and Marneuli-500 substations was assigned the dispatch name 500 kV “Asureti” transmission line.

In 2019, the section between Towers No. 109 and No. 42 of the 500 kV “Mukhrani” transmission line (18 km) was connected to the Marneuli-500 substation. This section will be incorporated into the scheme of the new 500 kV “Marneuli–Ayrum” transmission line, which will interconnect the power systems of Georgia and Armenia.
