500 kV “Mukhrani Valley” Transmission Line

The 500 kV “Mukhrani Valley” transmission line is an interconnection between the power systems of Georgia and Azerbaijan. Within the territory of Georgia, the line consists of the existing section of the 500 kV “Mukhrani” transmission line between Towers No. 1 and No. 36/1 (9.8 km, owned by JSC Sakrusenergo) and a newly constructed section extending from Tower No. 36/1 of the Mukhrani line to the Gardabani-500 substation (9.7 km, owned by the Georgian State Electrosystem).

The transmission line was commissioned in 2016 and interconnects the Gardabani-500 substation in Georgia with the Samukh substation in Azerbaijan. It crosses the Georgia–Azerbaijan border near the Red Bridge border crossing.

The 500 kV “Mukhrani Valley” transmission line has a maximum transmission capacity of 700 MW and a total length of 182.3 km. The line is equipped with a modern optical fiber cable.

The commissioning of this transmission line has significantly enhanced the reliability and resilience of Georgia’s power system, while also increasing the capacity for cross-border electricity exchange with Azerbaijan and other neighboring countries.
